The regular board meeting of School District No.73 (Kamloops/Thompson) was held on Sept. 26 at Barriere Elementary School.
One of the first orders of business was a welcoming address by Principal Phil Janicki, who gave a brief description of what the school has done so far this year. Then he introduced three grade 7 Barriere students who gave a presentation to the board.
Jordan Bauer, Dylan Huitema-Harrie and Ty Waite all spoke about their field trip to Clearwater, where they participated in the Raft River Salmon Interpretive Program. The field trip was sponsored by Simpcw First Nations, the Community Resource Centre of the North Thompson, the District of Clearwater, and the Wells Gray Country Services Committee. All three students described what they liked most about the field trip and the many stations and activities involved, especially learning about salmon and bats.
Rhonda Kershaw introduced herself to the board as this year’s newly elected Chair of the Parent Advisory Council.
The meeting then continued on to the business of the day. Several amended policies are in the works, including the Child Protection Policy and the Funding Policy, both of which will be brought up at the next board meeting.
The Finance and Planning Committee reported that the operating budget will be uploaded in the next 2 weeks.
The next regular public Board Meeting will occur on Monday, Oct. 3 at the School Board Office, 1383 9th Ave., Kamloops.
