Dorothy (Nell) Fennell

April 19, 1919 ~ November 14, 2008

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy (Nell) Fennell on November 14, 2008.

Nell was born on April 19, 1919 in Worthing, England. At the age of 14 she left school and did a a four year apprenticeship as an upholsterer. Then the war broke out and she served as a Red Cross Nurse in the Royal Army Medical Corp, travelling to many stations throughout Belgium, Germany and England.

In 1948 she had saved enough money to come to Canada to visit her sister Mae MacKenzie. who lived in Kamloops at the time. During that visit she met Sandy Fennell, and as they say “the rest is history”.

Sandy and Nell were married at Shuswap Lake on August 21, 1948. They then took up residence in Chu Chua on the Fennell family farm, where they raised their six children.

In 1963, Nell and Sandy purchased the Gulf Service Station, and the motel in Barriere, where they worked until 1980 when they retired.

Nell is survived by her six children; Mike (Karina) Fennell, Bev (Bill) Fraser, Jack (Leslie) Fennell, Barb (Darryl) Buchanan, Tom (Debra) Fennell, Greg (Debbie) Fennell. Grandchildren; Karin (Dave), Steven, Lindsay (Dan); Lisa (Joe), Lyle; Cory (Tasha), Kathy (Chris), Tyler (Rhonda); Danielle, Sean (Carly), Kipp, Luke; Jennifer (Hugo), Christina (Eric), Caleb, Alora; Shane, Samantha (Ryan), Stefanie (Simon).
