July 7, 1924 – November 29, 2010

John Gritt of Barriere, BC, passed away peacefully in the gentle care of the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House, Kamloops, BC, after a lengthy battle with cancer, on November 29, 2010. He was 86 years of age. Predeceased by his loving wife, Eleanor Ruth Gritt (née Coutts) on October 24, 2010, John is survived by his twin sons, Woodie (Carol) Gritt and Eddy (Debbie) Gritt, his daughter Stephanie Campbell, step-daughter Shirley (Ken) Johnson, his sister Phyllis Wynot of Nova Scotia, his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his wife Eleanor, John was predeceased by his son Terry Gritt, daughter Linda Bonin and step-daughter Connie Wilson.

John was born in Birch Cove, Nova Scotia to parents John Bernard and Mary Margaret (née Mahar) Gritt. He was a hard working man who held a number of jobs in the forestry industry including many hours spent as a tug boat operator. As a young adult, John served his country in the Canadian Navy until World War II ended. He was a medaled service man and he belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion.

John enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to hunt and be a part of nature; he and Eleanor built a log house – with no electricity – at Clucus Lake, BC (near Prince George). They worked together as John hunted and Eleanor prepared the moose they secured. John and Eleanor retired to Barriere in 1993 and enjoyed many years with their new friends and neighbours.
