Marian Eva Johnston

Marian Eva Johnston, 96, of Barriere passed on at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops on June 24. Beloved mother of Margaret Gidinski and Mel (Pat) Matthews and their families. Born Oct. 17, 1905, in Flesherton, Ontario.


In 1919 her family moved to a homestead at Neville, Saskatchewan. Graduated from normal school, Swift Current, Sask., and became a teacher, married Fred. W. Matthews in 1925 and was then a policeman’s wife and through the dust-bowl 30s, the farmer’s wife.


Moved to Vancouver in 1942 and became a welder at South Burrard Shipyard. Remarried Stan Johnston in 1952 and became mother to his daughter, Linda (Bill) Burchell. They worked on the CN Railway and he ran a health care home in New Westminster and White Rock, retired to Mel’s Farm in Langley on retirement. Stan predeceased her in 1975.


She moved to Barriere in 1987 where she resided in her own home until her death. She was much loved by her extended family.


A memorial service will be held at the Barriere Seniors’ Hall at 1 p.m., Friday, July 12. Personal Alternative Funeral Services 554-2324
