Pause For Thought: Come and be healed

In terror, the priests and rulers had fled the temple when Jesus had sternly commanded “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business!” (John 2:16)

Why did they flee and not stand their ground? They saw divinity flashing through humanity and had no power to resist. They knew they had done wrong by allowing and promoting unholy traffic in the temple. It was like they were standing before the Judge of heaven and were condemned. But instead of repenting, they hated Jesus for His public rebuke and were jealous of His influence over the people.

Slowly, the priests and rulers came back to the temple, and what a scene met their eyes… The poor who remained when they fled were now around Jesus for healing. With love and sympathy in His eyes, Jesus was healing the sick and sorrowful. Praise to God arose from the lips of those Jesus healed; every cry for blessing was heard; all were healed no matter what problem they had.

With gladness and joy they told anyone who would listen of their belief in Jesus being the Messiah. Having found a helper, they were ready to give their lives in service to Him.

Fearing Jesus might be a prophet from God, the priests and rulers asked Him for a sign of His authority. He answered with a parable, “Destroy this temple and in three days I’ll raise it up!” He meant His body temple and His coming death and resurrection. Jesus knew these words would be repeated throughout the world, and to many would be evidence of His divinity.

In ministering to the sick and needy in the temple, He showed how God sympathizes with all our weaknesses and desires us to come and be healed.
