PAUSE FOR THOUGHT: Love never fails

Jesus taught, “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). As Jesus encountered unbelief, criticism, accusations, and at the cross, torture and blasphemy, He was silent. In Isaiah 53:7, the prophet describes Jesus’ experience, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth.”

The highest nobility in a Christian is self-control. By maintaining a calm trusting spirit when under abuse and cruelty, a person reveals God’s perfection of character in mankind. The world may scorn a meek, quiet spirit, but God takes note and highly regards such. They are the ones who will inherit the earth and delight themselves in the abundance of peace (Psalm 37:11).

Jesus added, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). All who long to be like Jesus and make room for His presence in their hearts through the Holy Spirit will be satisfied. The Holy Spirit never leaves the side of those looking to Jesus. He’s there to reveal Christ to them, and never stops working until a transformation comes to all who continue to look to Jesus.

What a beautiful world this would be if all responded to the Holy Spirit’s working in our hearts, causing us to be like Jesus, having in us the pure element of His love described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-3a: Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy, love does not parade itself, is not puffed up, does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth… Love never fails.
