It had been a busy day teaching and healing, and now Jesus asked His disciples to go with Him across the lake where they could find a place of quiet and rest. After dismissing the multitude they quickly got into the boat and set off. Being utterly weary and hungry Jesus went to the stern and soon fell asleep.
The lake was quiet, the evening calm and pleasant. But suddenly darkness spread over the sky, a wild storm swept down from the mountains, and the lashing waves threatened to engulf the boat. The strength and skill of these hardy fishermen were no match, and in despair they cried out, “Master! Master!”
Darkness hid Him from view, the tempest drowned their voices. There was no reply.
Filled with doubt and fear, they wondered if Jesus had forsaken them. Then a flash of lightning revealed Him still asleep in the stern of the boat. The boat was filling with water, and in despair they cried out, “Master, don’t You care that we perish?”
Their cry awakened Jesus. Another flash of lightning showed heaven’s peace in His face as well as His tender love, and they cried out again, “Lord, save us; we perish!”
Never does anyone utter that cry unheeded. As the disciples make one last effort with the oars, lightning reveals Jesus standing up, raising His hand and saying to the angry sea, “Peace, be still.” The storm ceases, the stars shine on a calm sea.
Then Jesus asked His disciples, “Why were you fearful? Do you not yet have faith?”
It was faith—trust in God’s love and care—that Jesus rested. And so are we to rest in our Savior’s care. When in difficult situations remember, when we call on Jesus we won’t call in vain.
