PAUSE FOR THOUGHT: Words of Life

News of the miracle Jesus did in feeding the multitude spread far and wide bringing many searching for Jesus. But when they found out He was not setting up an earthly kingdom and freeing them from Rome’s rule, they turned away and joined the rabbis and priests in criticizing what Jesus was teaching of a heavenly kingdom of changed hearts and minds.

In feeding 5,000 the day before there was an object lesson. Ignoring it, the rabbis asked, “Show us a sign that You are the Messiah, and we will believe. Our fathers ate manna in the desert as it is written, ‘He gave them bread to eat.’”

Jesus answered, “Moses didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but My Father who gives you the true bread…The bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world….I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst…you have seen Me and yet do not believe” (John 6:30-36).

He further said that it was the will of His Father who sent Him that all who see and believe in His Son may have everlasting life and He would raise them up at the last day.

He continued, “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and are dead…I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world” (John 6:49, 51).

He explained, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63).
