To the editor,

Interesting! We had a promotional display on the Barriere Town Road for a couple of days this past week, strategically located across the road from the D & T Centre.

It seems if those involved were purporting to promote the cause of freedom.

I would dispute that. In reality they were promoting the twin evils of fear and ignorance, that have all too frequently threatened our species ever since our ancestors began walking upright.

They were unwittingly promoting these greatest of threats to our common humanity, our progress, and also, eventually, true freedom.

Because fear always leads to hate, and ignorance usually leads to stubborn perversity.

In this age of mass digital communication these great evils are promoted and compounded by an abundance of distortion, confusion, misinformation, malinformation and outright lies (the purpose of this latter I fail to understand) presented online by the anonymous, the misinformed and the maligne.

But be assured of this, that to the extent that such as these are successful in influencing behaviour, people will die of the misinformation. And there is a good chance that they and their allies will bring forth worse.

If these are what your future includes, get ready to enjoy them.
