On May 31, Gilbert Smith Forest Products Ltd. (GSFP) hosted a Safety Golf and Dinner at the Chinook Cove Golf Course.
Greg Smith commended the crew for their continued success in performing in a safe and healthy manner. He noted the evolution of safety guards and stairways along with diligent dust control and Worksafe compliance have contributed to a safe environment.
After an enjoyable golf game, some amusing prizes and a delicious dinner it was time to celebrate the retirement of Harley Wright. Harley has put in an extra-ordinary 41 years of service. He was recognized for his steadfast enthusiasm, his reliability and his conscientious work ethic.
Harley was also merited by WCB and GSFP for his outstanding commitment to the workplace health and safety. and for serving 37 years as Safety Chairman of the GSFP Safety Committee. Many of the crew, truckers and retirees along with their spouses were present to congratulate Harley and cheer him on to his next stage in life.
Over the past few years, since Harley had forewarned GSFP of his upcoming retirement, he has been conducting some rather extensive training throughout the yard, scales and log yard to ensure a smooth transition upon his leaving.
Harley oversaw the demolition and tear down of some old structures on the site, and was instrumental in ensuring an environmentally safe and clean removal of the old fuel tanks. His landscaping skills are evident from recycling the mills old original Headrig carriage to the entrance sign to a new berm along the highway.
Harley has truly been indispensable to the company and will be missed.
