The  2015-2016 High School Athletic Year is finished and in the books for Barriere Secondary School with it being one of the most successful seasons to date.

This year both our senior girls volleyball and basketball teams qualified to attend Provincials,  and this year we had our largest number of track and field qualifiers in recent years.

Our girls soccer team made huge advancements forward this year while earning a few victories along the way. With a solid group of young female athletes, mostly in grade 8 and 9, Barriere girls soccer looks bright. The team finished in third place in regular season, and ended up losing a closely contested game against rivals Clearwater for the third and final spot to qualify for the Okanagan Valley Championships.

With the youth of the Barriere team next year we look forward to advancing out of the West Zone and qualifying for the Okanagan Championships. A very special thank you goes out to Mr. Bryn Leary and Mr. Aaron Cousins for coaching this group of girls this year.

The North Thompson Boys Rugby Team had another great season. Both the junior and senior squads battled hard throughout the season, dealing with a lot of bumps and bruises along the way. The senior boys squad finished in fourth spot in the Okanagans after losing their playoff game to a very tough Kelowna Christian squad.

Our junior boys squad dominated their way through the West Zone league beating up on much larger schools such as Sahali and Merritt. This rugby season would not have been possible without the time and effort put into this team by Mr. Gabe Francis (Clearwater) and Mr. Ken Rife.

The Barriere Track and Field Team had another successful season. We have over 30 athletes qualify to attend the Okanagan Valley Championships.

Kiera Eustache won the Okanagan Valley Senior girls title in steeple chase and Jordan Bauer defended her champion title in the race walk event.

Barriere had a group of 12 athletes qualify to attend the Provincial Championships in Nanaimo, however, due to prior commitments only Sakwuwa Dunstan-Stayner (shot put, discus, and hammer throw), and Lane Robinson (steeple Chase) are able to attend.

Barriere Golf Team expanded this year to include a junior and senior team. Our senior team won the West Zone championships and qualified for Okanagans finishing their season in third place at the Okanagans. Barriere Golf Team is forever grateful for the support shown by our local golf course Chinook Cove, which allowed our teams to practice free of charge. The team would also like to say thank you very much for the time that Mr. Ken Rife invested into the team.

The Barriere Secondary Athletic Banquet  is scheduled for Thursday, June 16, with a potluck dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium.  Awards will be presented starting at 6 p.m.
