Barriere Youth Soccer players hit the road last week to compete in the invitational Tom Watson Memorial Ashcroft Soccer Tournament May 7-8.

The tournament was the first time on the pitch in the past two years, and players and parents braved the chilly weather to enjoy a fun-filled weekend.

The U10 team placed first, while the U13 team battled hard but came up one goal short of third place.

About eight teams competed in the weekend tournament.

“It went pretty well despite the weather,” said Chris Matthews, the U13 coach and president of the association. “

They were a little rusty at first but progressed better and better as the weekend went on.”

Matthews said the U13 team worked hard but was unable to rank in the top three of the tournament.

“We ended up playing six games,” he said of the U13 team. “They were pretty tired by the end.”

The players will now play some exhibition games with Clearwater May 18 and May 25 ahead of another tournament in Clearwater the first weekend of June.

About 135 players have registered for this season.
