Be prepared when exploring backcountry in B.C. this season

Avalanche Canada’s warning for the backcountry is still in effect

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Emergency Management

VICTORIA - “This weekend has brought more tragedy to our mountains because of avalanches. Our hearts break for the families of those who have lost loved ones to B.C.’s backcountry this season,” states Hon. Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness.

“I love the outdoors. It’s what makes B.C. so remarkable. But it can be dangerous, even when you equip yourself with the proper training and tools for survival. The risk is real. Avalanche Canada’s warning is still in effect.

“We are urging British Columbians and visitors to our beautiful province to take great caution when exploring outdoors.

“Be aware of the snow conditions in the area before heading out (check the avalanche forecast at www.avalanche.ca), take an avalanche skills training course and take the proper gear (transceiver, probe, and shovel). This won’t eliminate the risk, but it will increase the chances for returning home safely.”
