Barriere Secondary School

The winter athletic season is coming to an end at Barriere Secondary School, now looking back on a very successful basketball season, and looking forward to starting-up Girls Soccer, and Track & Field.

Both Junior basketball programs finished up in second place in their tier 2 playoffs. The girls losing to power house South Kamloops, and the boys dropping the final to Chase.

The Senior Girls basketball team finished in third place, just missing qualifying for the Okanagan Valley Championships by the smallest of margins after losing a very close game to Kamloops rivals St. Ann’s in literally the last few seconds of the game. Outstanding performances were turned in by all four graduating seniors Molly Lampreau, Kate Schilling, Marissa Eustache, and Jess Gardner who played their best and final game in a Barriere uniform.

The Senior Boys team took the long road to qualify for the Okanagan championships. After losing their semi final to Chase, they battled hard against Ashcroft to keep their season from ending early. The BSS Senior Boys faced back-to-back challenge games to earn their spot at the Valley Championships, first against Kamloops Christian School and then travelling to Vernon Christian, beating both challenging teams handily to book their ticket to the Championship. After being ranked lower than they should have been, the team faced a very tough first round match up against provincially top ranked Keremeos. The boys bounced back after their first round lost to trounce Charles Bloom. By winning, they stepped up another chance against St. Ann’s. The Crusaders took the victory after four Barriere players fouled out of a very tough and physical game. Barriere is sad to say goodbye to graduating seniors Tristan Lloyd, Bishop Realff, Jordan Rainer, Jake Bauer, and Derek Ficke who led the way for your cougar team this season.

Looking ahead to the Spring season, BSS has a group of female athletes that are interested in playing soccer this season, however, the school is in desperate need of a girls soccer coach. If they do not have someone that is willing to volunteer to coach this team they will have to cancel the season.

If you are interested in coaching please contact Miss Shannik at the school; 250-672-9943.

Track and Field will be returning back to Barriere Secondary this spring. They are also hoping to get a golf team starting this season. The school has a core group of golfers ready to compete, but are still looking for a few more team members.
