Council backs green building regs for private sector

New developments in Victoria may soon be required to build storage space for collecting recyclables and follow landscaping principles aimed at conserving rainwater.

City hall already encourages green building principles, but they may soon have more weight.

Last week, city council directed staff to craft a number of regulations that all developers must abide by in order to obtain a development permit or rezoning.

City staff will also explore a green transportation reserve fund and review the off-street parking standards to encourage other modes of transit.

The plan also involves incentives for the private sector. The proposed program would recognize large developments that complete a green building third party certification.

In 2006, the city developed its own building standards for municipal facilities. In 2008, the city adopted a list of green building guiding principles based on the findings of a report by Stantec.
