On November 18, 1961, the Burfield Chairlift began turning for the first time, taking skiers up to the peak of Tod Mountain to access the steep and challenging terrain. At that time, the Burfield lift was the longest chairlift in North America.
50 years later, Tod Mountain has developed into the world class destination known as Sun Peaks Resort, and the Burfield lift is still the place to be for core skiers and snowboarders.
Sun Peaks Resort is starting to gear up to commemorate the Golden Anniversary of Tod Mountain with celebrations set to commence on December 3, 2011, shortly after the Winter 2011-12 season begins in late November.
The countdown to the 50th officially got underway last week as the Resort’s Board of Directors visited from Nippon Cable in Japan to launch the commemorative 50th logo. Nippon Cable purchased the resort area in 1992 and formed Sun Peaks Resort.
A Facebook page for the Golden Anniversary has also been established allowing guests and area residents to share their favourite photos and memories of the notorious Tod Mountain Days.
“There are 50 years of memories, photos, and funny stories that we are looking forward to hearing over the next year,” says Anne Haight, Director of Sales and Marketing with Sun Peaks Resort Corporation. “Tod Mountain is the foundation of what is now Sun Peaks and we’re excited to celebrate and share the year with past and future skiers.”
